Businesses who choose to use self-storage to get rid of items they do not use on a regular basis can potentially save a lot of money. Why rent office space when you can simply store it? However, in our many years of offering a variety of storage types and sizes, we know that businesses are often not sure where to start. Read on to get the facts on what self-storage organization skills can be utilized.
Don’t Start without a List
As you work to correctly organize your self-storage unit, remember the singular goal: Retrieval. Every item you store should be easily accessible. This is why we recommend making a list from the very beginning. Everything that goes into storage should on your inventory so that you will quickly and easily know where it is.
Once you have a list of the items you plan to store, group those items together and determine what needs to go in a box and what can go on a shelf. Only when you know the basics of what you will be storing will you have the necessary information to choose the right storage size.
Make Sure You Are Packing Properly
This may seem like obvious advice but the truth is that you must take special care to pack correctly. Do not rush it. Do not give in to the urge to simply put things in boxes and be done with it. Get new boxes. Invest in bubble wrap. Use bins and other storage solutions for smaller pieces. It may seem like a pain in the short term, but in the long run you will be glad you packed correctly.
Create a Map So You Know Where Everything Is
Even if you take part in every part of moving items into a storage unit, do not assume that you will remember where things are months from now. Draw a map, write down where everything is, the date it was packed, and as much other information as you have. Not only will this make things easier for you, but it will make things easier for whoever comes after you.
Have an Idea of How Long You Will Use Your Storage Facility
If you are planning to store items indefinitely, then your plan to pack and store them will be different than if you need regular access. Some clients store items during slow times of the year and bring them out when it gets busy. Whatever your plan is, it’s wise to have it in advance so you know what you’re doing.
