Moving Box Extravaganza: Learn 4 Unique Uses for Your Used Moving Boxes

After you’ve moved your items into your new home or your new self-storage unit, you may wonder what to do with all those moving boxes. You can break them down and store them in your storage unit until you need them again. You could donate them to someone else who needs them. Or you could check out these four alternative ways to use your old moving boxes.

  1. Turning Your Moving Boxes into Kids’ Toys
  2. If you have younger children, you have likely experience buying them a present only to find that they prefer the box more than the toy. Why not cut out the middleman and make toys out of boxes? You can draw or paint them to look like racing cars, rocket ships, pirates ships, or any other type of vehicle. You can use several boxes to build a fort. There is no shortage of things you can do to make a box feel like fun.

  3. Turning Them into Fun Play Spots for Your Pets
  4. Just like kids, pets often find tons of fun to be had in boxes. If you just leave the box on the floor, you may find your pets jumping in and out, enjoying themselves tremendously. If you take it another level and cover the box with fabric, it can become a cat scratching pad. Do you want to create a unique condo for your cat? Stack several boxes on top of each other and secure them with duct tape. You’ve just saved yourself hundreds of dollars.

  5. Use Cardboard Boxes in Your Compost
  6. If you have a compost pile, remember that you can use cardboard boxes in them. Remember too that you will need to cut the cardboard into much smaller pieces. If you keep the pieces large, they will not break down very quickly and it could end up bringing your compost pile to a halt. We recommend using a shredder to get the boxes cut into very small pieces, or you can cut them with scissors. Then add them to your compost pile. If you have a large number of boxes, spread out adding them until some have had a chance to break down.

  7. Turn Your Boxes into Storage Bins
  8. Why spend $20+ for storage boxes when you can make your own? If you have boxes, a little bit of fabric and / or some wrapping paper, then you can quickly, easily, and affordably make your own custom, beautiful storage bins. Use them for everything from clothing to kitchen towels.
