Can You Really Declutter Your Home in 30 Days? You Can if You Follow These Tips

If you have found your home overcome by clutter but are not sure how to get rid of it, we have an interesting challenge for you: The 30 day declutter. It may sound complicated but we can actually break it down into three easy-to-follow sections.

The First Ten days: Living Room, Bathroom, and Kitchen

Start off relatively slow by tackling rooms that likely have less clutter than other parts of your home. If you have extra pieces of furniture taking up too much space in the living room, consider putting it in self-storage. If you find that you have way too many dishes in your kitchen, pack up the extras and take them down to your local storage center.

Look in your bathroom cabinets to determine if you’re holding on to stuff that you are no longer using. For example, do you have old makeup that’s out of style? Do you have hair gel with 2% left in it? Get rid of anything you have not used for the last six months.

The Second Set of Ten Days

Next you will take on your bedroom and closet – or plural if you have several. This can be complicated. We recommend that you start from the top and work your way down. Look at the highest shelves, take everything off, and decide if you really need it. Keep three boxes: One for storage, one to keep, and one to get rid of. Be realistic – if you have not needed it in the last year then you are not likely to need it in the next year.

The Final Ten Days

This is essentially the time to get done with anything you haven’t done. What rooms that entails will of course depend on the rooms in your home. If you have a garage, take the time to remove everything and only return things you use regularly. If you have additional spaces, such as a linen closet, go through those as well. When you get down to the final spaces it can be tempting just to shove all the things you don’t know what to do with into one closet or room. Do not do this.

Instead, embrace the power of a clean, organized storage unit that can keep your items safe and secure until you need them again.
