Are You Getting Ready to Move? Avoid Making These Three Common Mistakes

A recent study found that moving is one of the ten most stressful events in the average person’s life. There is so much to do, so many unknowns, and so much change all at the same time. At Spaceman Storage we have shared many tips on how to move successfully but today we will cover it form the other side: Check out these three common moving mistakes you can avoid.

  1. Mistake One:Waiting Until the Last Minute
  2. If you allow procrastination to take over, it is just going to make the process harder. Instead, plan your move ahead of time. If you have months to plan it, then use that time. If you wait until the weeks or days before, you will have a lot of unnecessary stress that could case you to make poor decisions. Start by going through your belongings and determining what needs to move with you, what can be thrown away or donated, and what you will put in your self-storage unit. Once you have an answer to those questions, you will be better able to plan the size of truck you need, the size storage unit you need, and much more.
  3. Mistake Two:Keeping Things You Don’t Need
  4. One of the best parts of moving is the chance to get rid of clutter. Do not simply grab a box, take it into a room, and start putting everything into it. Instead, ask yourself when the last time you used it was. Ask yourself if you will really need it. Ask yourself if you know exactly where it will go in your new home. If you do not, then it is not likely that you need to take it with you. Think about the space in your new home and how it will be utilized. If you are moving into a smaller home then you do not need as much. If you are moving into a home that’s the same size or bigger, make sure to consider if any particular room is smaller. For example, if your bedroom is smaller then you might not need all the furniture you think you do.
  5. Mistake Three: Getting Rid of Things You Will Need
  6. Note that your only options are not to get rid of anything you don’t need right now or keep it forever. In some cases, you might be temporarily downgrading and want to hold on to some items you will not necessarily be using immediately. In other instances, you might be moving from a one-bedroom to a two-bedroom house but know that in the future you’ll have a two-bedroom home again.

In these situations, it is best to keep your items in storage so that you will be able to access them later. We can help you at Spaceman Storage. Feel free to call us at 562-696-3924 if you have questions or need assistance.
